The young Ipswich players performed quite well despite going down 2-1 to Charlton – the view of Blues manager Roy Keane.

Ipswich had six teenage players on the pitch against the Addicks at one point in the game, and each and every one pleased Keano, who told the club site: ‘I thought all the young players did well and I was very pleased with them.

‘We have a lot of injures so we had to mix it up a bit and throw some youngsters in against a decent Charlton side who were playing in the Championship last season.’

Despite conceding a penalty, Keane reserved praise for new boy Shane O’Connor: ‘Shane probably sees himself as a midfielder but he filled in at left back with Damien injured and he recovered well in the second-half.

‘He showed a great attitude and desire.’
