David McGoldrick will step up his rehabilitation next week as he works with world renowned specialist Bill Knowles in the US.

The strength and conditioning coach will be working with him to try and aide his recovery from the knee problems he sustained last season, as having torn his medial knee ligament in the match against Blackpool in February, he was then close to a return before he suffered cartilage damage that required surgery and both injuries conspired to bring an early end to his season.

Having undergone the initial rehabilitation work at Ipswich, he will now travel to Philadelphia for the next step of his recovery as we bid to get him fit as close to the start of the season as we can.

Knowles has previously worked with Tiger Woods, Jonny Wilkinson, Frank Lampard and Mario Balotelli, so Didz will be in very good hands indeed.

Physio Matt Byard told the Official Site.

‘This will give Didz the opportunity to have an intense week of rehabilitation with an internationally renowned strength and conditioning coach. We have been working closely with a specialist in London, Andy Williams, and it’s on his recommendation that Didz is going to the States. I spoke to the manager about it and what we wanted to do. He spoke to the owner and straightaway came back and said we had to go ahead, which is obviously great to receive that support.’

Byard goes on to say that when McGoldrick returns from America and his week long course, the club will follow the same programme with him for another week and Knowles will provide us with all the details for that, with obviously any tweaks needed following his face to face time with him, so he’ll be remaining at the training ground to continue his recovery as opposed to travelling with the team to Ireland which should be more beneficial for his recovery.

‘Everything has gone according to plan in terms of his recovery and the timeframe that is involved, which we set as soon as we knew Didz would need the cartilage operation.’

That timeframe will obviously see him miss out trip to Ireland and most definitely the West Ham game, but they are very hopeful he can start playing a part in our later pre season friendlies with the aim of having him at least in contention and fully fit for the opening game of the campaign, even if he’s a week or so behind everybody else in terms of match sharpness.
