A solid performance, plenty of positives and three points to boot following our opening day fixture against relegated Fulham has left manager Mick McCarthy pretty pleased this weekend.

Speaking to the Official Site McCarthy said he felt we were definitely worthy of all three points given how we performed over the 90 minutes and he was delighted to see both Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick get on the score sheet again.

‘I thought we deserved it. We played well and it’s great to start with a win, especially against a team relegated from the Premier League. They’ve got quality players and we have to work very hard to get the win. We were hanging on there after they scored but for the first 85 minutes, we were the better side.’

McCarthy goes on to say that their goal was unfortunate as it came from a deflection and goals like that had a habit of rearing their head last season, so he’s hoping it doesn’t happen to often in 2014-15 as they did cost us.

‘Murph was excellent, he took his goal well and did great for Didz’s goal and of course, it was great to see Didz back. We didn’t think he’d make the first game a few weeks back but he has worked really hard and the physios must take credit as well. It was a boost for every to see him out there.’

Over course McGoldrick came on far earlier than anybody expected after the gaffer took summer signing Bajner off after he had given his all and was running on empty, but he came through it well and confidence alone from playing that many minutes this quickly will do him the world of good.

The gaffer also confirmed that Carl Skuse was subbed because he had picked up a foot injury, but hopefully it’s nothing too bad.
