The phrase ‘you can’t win anything with kids’ is famous in the English game, Fulham have some talented young players on their books but it was Ipswich’s own young talent and the experienced heads that helped us to a Portman Road win on Saturday.
Ipswich’s 2014/15 season got off to a perfect start with the live evening sky sports game seeing us beat Fulham 2-1.
We started well, Christophe Berra forcing Jesse Joronen into a good save as he tipped the defenders header over with Cole Skuse twice going close, the closest being a dinked lob he tried that was always difficult to control.
Fulham’s Moussa Dembele, the namesake of another former Fulham player, had a great chance to put the visitors ahead but Dean Gerken recovered from his own error as he fumbled Chris David’s shot to also block the follow up.
Daryl Murphy (32) made him, and Fulham, pay for this miss….
The second top goalscorer for Ipswich last season took on Luke Hyam’s pass to beat his man and fire past Joronen, with that goal giving us a one-nil half time lead.
Ross McCormack, Fulham’s club record £11m summer signing, was taken off with less than an hour played having failed to make an impact, like most of his teammates!
Back from a season ending injury last time round David McGoldrick (61) marked his return as he showed McCormack and co how to do it, firing home from just inside the area on the hour to double our lead.
17-year-old Patrick Roberts caused us a few problems when he came on, to become yet another Fulham debutant with them having late hope when Tim Hoogland’s shot deflected in off Tommy Smith to make it two-one but Town saw it through to record a deserved opening day win.
