Manager Mick McCarthy has said that he was delighted to be able to bring David McGoldrick back onto the pitch in the game against Southend United last night.

The 26 year old has been out since February so this was his first match action in five months following the knee injury he sustained, and although it was only 20 minutes it was still a huge 20 minutes for him.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, the gaffer explained.

‘It was great to see Didz back in action and he has done remarkably well because he has only trained three or four times with the group. He showed some silky touches but he is short of match fitness, five months short of match fitness.’

McCarthy goes on to say that despite selecting him in the squad, he was in two minds about whether to put him on or not because of how long the grass was and he worried that maybe he’d get his studs stuck and twist his knee, but having had a run out at half time, Didz was confident he’d be okay so the gaffer went with it.

‘We’re obviously delighted he’s back but he has a way to go yet. We won’t be setting any date on him being ready. He will be ready when he’s ready.’

Having got on the pitch now hopefully he’ll see daily improvements in his fitness and whilst you’d expect us to be a good few games into the season before he’s right for starting contention, a few run outs from the bench in increasing time will do him no harm at all.
