Crewe Alexandra have confirmed that an unnamed club are close to matching their valuation for striker Nicky Maynard, who is a known target of Ipswich.
It is likely that Jim Magilton will want two new strikers at Portman Road this summer, having been chasing Maynard, Angelos Charisteas, Kevin Lisbie and Shola Ameobi amongst others this summer.
Magilton confirmed that he was interested in Maynard, but things on that front have quietened down in the past week or so. However, the Alex boss Steve Holland has admitted that they have received bids for his star player and Maynard has been informed about them.
He said: ‘From my own point of view he needs another season in League One. But while we don’t want him to go, we do have a responsibility to let him know what options he has.
‘We have kept him in touch with everything that has happened and he knows every offer that has been made and every club interested.’
There is no indication as to which club has made the bid that is close to Crewe’s valuation, but it is thought to be either Ipswich or Bristol City.
