Hunt and Varney The Aces In The Pack?

Luke Varney has said that he is desperate to play in Town’s latest promotion push and he has not ruled out a permanent move to the blues in the summer sometime.

He is equally eager to play in the Premier again and this would surely be his last chance of glory at the highest level of English football, having done so with Blackpool before.

He may be 32 but he still has the passion to succeed and certainly he has performed a lot better than many of us anticipated when he was drafted in on loan from Rovers at the back end of the season.

Varney still has a point to prove and he has shown determination and endeavour so far and is perhaps a little unlucky to be on one goal in ten appearances. It is worth bearing in mind however that five of those came from the substitutes bench.

As for Noel Hunt, well he is another ace up our sleeve in my view. From day one he has shown his true worth and who could possibly forget that last gasp winner against Charlton in November when he scored at the very death.

That got us three valuable points when we were all probably expecting one and is the difference between us reaching the play-off’s or failing narrowly like Wolves and Derby so hats off to our Noel!

He also scored two away at Millwall of course so his stats look interesting. Mainly due to injury, he has only been selected eight times for Town but has managed to score three goals!

At 31, he is also at a good age and just a few months younger than Daryl Murphy and he adds experience to the striking department having played Premiership football with Reading and international football with Ireland over the years.

What I particularly like about Noel is his unwavering commitment to the cause. When he is not playing you will see him on the sidelines jumping for joy when the blues score and his miraculous recovery from that serious knee ligament injury which should have seen him out for the rest of the season is truly breathtaking!

We often wax lyrical about the quality of Daryl Murphy and the goal threat that is Freddie Sears but we should not forget the men we have in reserve because at the end of the day they could really make a significant difference in our fight for Premier glory.

The men from across the county also have plenty of fire power and not just in attack but it is reassuring to know that if injury besets one of our main strikers we have able forwards lying in wait for their big chance to show their true colours!
