Gilligham winger Chris Whelpdale is the name in the papers today as the man Ipswich are tracking.

Town coach Sean McCarthy has been watching Whelpdale for a while and was spotted at Priestfield watching him play in the Gills’ F.A. Cup replay win over Bournemouth last week.

A chest infection kept him out of Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Braddford City but Ipswich are expected to make their move for him in the January window.

The Super Blues had Whelpdale at their Academy but he was released in 2004 during Joe Royle’s reign and the Brentwood-born 23-year-old went back to Essex with non-league Maldon before moving on to Billericay.

Darren Ferguson signed him and he
helped Peterborough win back to back promotions from League Two to the Championship.
