Manager Mick McCarthy was at his boastful best in his post match interview when he said that winning was everything and if the Blues continued to win, the bad times would be quickly forgotten.
But is this really as simple as all that? Does he not realise that the reason the Blues performed so much better last night was because team selections were forced upon him to a large extent?
The inclusion of midfield pair Huws and Diagouraga; along of course with Grant Ward, made the world of difference to our levels of creativity and we can only thank our lucky stars that McCarthy was unable to pick his favoured few, due in the main to injuries to Skuse and Knudsen.
It was nice to see Jonny Williams amongst the subs and he was joined by strikers Brett Pitman and Kieffer Moore on the night.
The goals, when they came, arrived quite early for a change and it was wonderful to see David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears both get on the scoresheet before the interval. They probably needed those goals almost as much as Ipswich Town needed all three points from this one and Sears ended up with two, after a late breakaway goal and a precision pass from McGoldrick.
I was however disappointed and infuriated to hear that Mick Mccarthy lambasted poor Myles Kenlock for conceding a free kick in a dangerous place in the second half. McCarthy admitted he was not the only guilty party but he WAS the only one that got screamed at from the dug-out which I think was a disgrace.
McCarthy’s defence was that if the Latics had have scored from the free-kick then the crowd would have turned on him. Once again though the manager is inconsistent. How many gaffs have messers Skuse and Douglas committed week in and week out, only for the gaffer to sing their praises afterwards?
One win does not change the general fans perception that Mick McCarthy is out of touch with reality. He is as stubborn as an old mule and thinks that supporters do not have the nouse to work out what is going on when the game kicks off.
The attendance last night at Portman Road was the lowest this century and yet our manager is of the view that a few more wins and everything will be forgotten.
He should remember then that in football terms you are only as good as your last match and with Fulham coming up we should air on the side of caution.
The blame game is lying dormant for now but it certainly has not gone away that’s for sure!
