Tractor Boys Still Need To Strengthen

We have all got gloating rights over our nearest neighbours just now but the squad is looking a bit thin and is in need of reinforcements.

And as we bask in the glory of another wonderful victory at the weekend away to Charlton, we must try to guard against taking this division for granted.

I am probably stating the obvious here when I say that this is perhaps the most challenging domestic league in the world and those early pace-setters are now seriously struggling as anyone can beat anyone.

Nottingham Forest lost again at the weekend and so too did leaders Derby so suddenly we found ourselves in the unlikely position of being just one point off the top spot as we head towards the half-way point of the season in fine spirits.

Our neighbours Norwich are now 7 points behind us and it seems a life time away since we lost to them at home way back in in August!

The Canaries now find themselves in mid-table and what gives us a chance this season is the fact that there are no run-away leaders, which means the first two automatic places to the Premier might still be up for grabs as the season closes.

Now the temptation here is to get carried away with our more recent success. The trials and tribulations of other Championship clubs should warn us against over-confidence and certainly Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor will instill into the squad a workmanlike mentality.

Complacency will not have a chance to grow whilst they are in charge!

That said, we are not half way through this season and already the injuries are starting to mount. So far it is the midfield that is suffering the most; with Teddy Bishop, Luke Hyam, Jonathan Williams and Kevin Bru all falling victim to injury of late.

With the January transfer window just weeks away and given the Town`s lofty League position, perhaps there is no better time to get in new recruits. For the first time in many years perhaps because players from other clubs will see the blues as an attractive proposition.

This is where Marcus Evans might be able to help the manager get who he wants, without destroying the fragile wage structure at the club.

Midfield seems an obvious place to start and if we can hang on to Tyrone Mings and David McGoldrick a second time around then there is hope we will stand a genuine chance of progression to pastures new!
