Results of latest Vital Ipswich poll on Town’s run-in for the 2010/11 season.

With their derby disaster against Norwich City all but ending any lingering hopes of a playoff push, Ipswich Town have since been left playing for points in their final three matches of the 2010/11 season. The question is how many will they get?

Since the 5-1 demolition by the Canaries at Portman Road on Maundy Thursday, Vital Ipswich have been asking you how many points you think the Blues will finish with this season. An away match at Swansea City, a home match against Preston North End and a final trip to Leicester City complete Town’s fixture programme for the 2010/11 Championship campaign, with a maximum 9 points available at the start of voting to add to the 59 accumulated up to the Easter weekend. That meant that Paul Jewell’s men could potentially finish with 68 points – the club’s highest tally since they narrowly missed out on the playoffs in 2007/08.

As such, we gave you three possible options for Town’s final points tally, and here’s how you voted:

50% – 59pts-62pts (0-3 out of 9)
40% – 63pts-65pts (4-6 out of 9)
10% – 66pts-68pts (7-9 out of 9)

Conservative estimates were the order of the day in this instance, with half of all respondents predicting that Town will finish with a disappointing return of between 59pts and 62pts, meaning nothing better than one win or three draws from their final three matches. Of the other half, only a quarter felt that the Blues could achieve 66pts or more – a feat which would have required them to go undefeated after the loss to Norwich.

Suffice it to say, the 4-1 battering by Swansea on Easter Monday eliminated any possibility of the top bracket, meaning that the most Ipswich could subsequently finish with would be 65pts. That remains a possibility after the 2-1 win over Preston on Saturday, but our poll suggests that most would anticipate a defeat to Leicester on Saturday to leave Town on 62 for the season – a final tally equal to that of Jim Magilton’s first season in charge. So, can Jewell’s boys better that total with just one game left? All will be revealed at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday, when the Blues finally bring their 2010/11 campaign to a close.
