Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp and Portsmouth frontman David Nugent could both be targeted by Ipswich Town this summer, according to reports.
Manager Paul Jewell is known to be on the lookout for new talent up front after yet another rather toothless campaign in front of goal for the Blues. Ipswich could well be facing next season without top scorer David Norris, who has netted 11 in all competitions this season, whilst leading striker Jason Scotland recorded only his tenth goal of the campaign against Preston on Saturday.
Tabloid reports claim that Town are leading the chase for Doncaster man Sharp, 25, who is supposedly valued at around £2.5 million after netting 15 Championship goals since joining Rovers from Sheffield United last summer. There are also suggestions that the Blues could resume their pursuit of Portsmouth’s Nugent, who has found the net 12 times in the league for the South Coast club this season. The Blues are known to have targeted Nugent numerous times before, with a possible loan deal for the 26-year-old former Preston striker breaking down in controversial circumstances in 2008.
Meanwhile there is ongoing speculation that Ipswich are struggling to tie up new deals for the considerable number of Blues players out-of-contract at the end of the season. Jewell has suggested that negotiations may now continue well into the close season, with Jack Ainsley, Troy Brown, Tom Eastman, Colin Healy, Conor Hourihane, Arran Lee-Barrett and Brian Murphy all yet to decide on their offers. Defender Gareth McAuley has also yet to put pen to paper on his new contract despite agreeing terms with the club, with Rangers now reported to be interested in the Northern Ireland international.
