Herbert Spencer once said that opinion is ultimately determined by feelings and not by the intellect. This former philosopher and anthropologist certainly makes a valid point because without opinions we are nothing more than shallow souls.
Like every supporter of every club, the length and breadth of England, every one of us has a point of view and I am especially proud that here at Ipswich Town we are indeed a broad church of diverse opinions. The trouble is that the quiet folk of Suffolk seem a little reluctant to air them. Almost as if an opinion is like hanging your dirty laundry on the line to be examined by others.
I am a regular member of the Radio Suffolk phone-in club and when Graeme Mac introduces Final Whistle the chances are I have already booked my call! Once again though, I am left a little disappointed. Why so few callers when we win and so many when we lose? As Alexander Pope so eloquently put it, “Some praise at morning what they blame at night, but always think the last opinion right.” I would argue though that at least these people are airing their views and even if they fall into the fair-weather supporter category, they are sharing their opinion!
Is it, I wonder, the Suffolk mind-set that is wrong – or am I missing something a little more fundamental? Other clubs do not seem to suffer such extreme degrees of apathy, which begs the question, why at Ipswich Town? Is it perhaps because too many indifferent seasons outside of the Premiership has nurtured a state of emotional suppression? Who knows? Somehow I guess you know though!
This website is dedicated to every Town supporter and it does not matter where you live or what sex or age you are. The only criterion we use is that you support the blues so why not air those views! Come on folks stand up and be counted!
