Former Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham missed out on a move to Spurs because he cost too much.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp admitted he listend to the advice of ex-Ipswich academy director and assistant manager Bryan Klug who now works for Spurs, and was tempted the burly teenaged striker.

‘We kept looking at him. We watched him dozens of times and we liked him but we felt it was a lot of money for him,’ Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

‘We have young players here like Harry Kane. He is a bit younger, we like him and we didn’t feel we wanted to pay that money for Wickham.’

Wickham was bought by the then Sunderland boss Steve Bruce for an initial £8m, rising to a possible £12m, but he then kept him in cotton wool as he developed, and got over an injury, but Martin O’Neill used him in his first game in charge and the youngster who landed in Town’s lap after his soldier father was transferred to Colchester, could play against Spurs today.
