Manager Mick McCarthy has said there were some positives from the one nil loss to Crawley in the first round of the Capital One Cup last night.
A narrow one nil victory for them left Ipswich as one of the sides ‘giant-killed’ in the first round, but speaking to the Official Site the gaffer knows he can take some heart from the game.
‘It’s a painful way of going out of the cup and I would have preferred it not to have happened in extra time as well with Christophe, Chambo and Elliott Hewitt playing 120 minutes. I thought we did enough in 90 minutes to have won the game but we didn’t take our chances and we weren’t good enough when we had those chances.’
McCarthy goes on to talk about the positives he can take and they were mainly associated with the young players on show, describing Matt Clarke as ‘outstanding’ and ‘he showed something about him when he was down with cramp at the end and still pushing forward to get us a corner’.
McCarthy adds that Teddy Bishop and Steve (Darren) McQueen were also huge positives for him on the night as well.
Anthony Woodsworth also spoke after the game and said he felt that he and some of the team ‘missed a chance’ to really impress the gaffer following the exit.
‘It’s never nice to go out of a cup competition and I’m disappointed we haven’t been able to give the gaffer more of a headache for Saturday. There were a lot of players in the team who didn’t play on Saturday – myself included – and I don’t feel as though I grasped that opportunity and I’m sure a few of the boys feel the same.’
Wordsworth admits it was a very low and quiet dressing room after the game, which is a shame, because echoing the gaffer, he thought the youngsters that were given a chance did do well and of course for them their best chance of games and building experience is undoubtedly cup competitions.
