Manager Mick McCarthy has said he was pleased with how our youngsters especially did in the friendly last night against West Ham.

Speaking to the Official Site following the score less draw, the gaffer described it as a very good workout for the team and whilst it wasn’t the most thrilling game with few chances really for either side, there were chances he felt we should’ve done better with, but he knows that composure will come as the fitness and sharpness grows further.

‘It was a good work out for both teams – well, all four teams if you like, with us both playing a different 11 in the second half. We had some good chances in the first half, Jack, Cameron Stewart, Frank. It was a bit more a of stalemate in the second half but it’s never easy changing things around at half time and players starting the game then.’

With positives to take, McCarthy main pleasure on the night was the younger lads getting a run out and showing what they could be capable of in the future, and he added.

‘I was pleased with our youngsters. Teddy Bishop did great. He’s a good footballer and showed tonight that he can get round the pitch and put a tackle in. Alex Henshall showed his pace and put some good crosses in as well so that was encouraging, seeing the young players out there.’

Having just signed Bartosz Bialkowski, and said that in his mind with the shirt obviously up for grabs, Dean Gerken did remain his number 1 at the club, McCarthy also spoke about the goalkeeping situation now following the West Ham encounter where each of them obviously got 45 minutes under their belt.

‘Bart did really well. He looks a good keeper. We have been watching him for a while. He has been number one at Notts County and will give us good competition in the goalkeeping area. Gerks has been fantastic for us. He will be starting at number one but he knows that if he doesn’t keep up his performances and Bart is doing better, Bart will play.’

McCarthy goes ont o say it’s football and it’s how he should be and points to last season where Scott Loach started as our number 1, but once Gerks got his chance he never looked back.

‘He deserves to start the season as number 1 but looking at Bart, he is going to be pushing him all the way.’
