Mick McCarthy Hints At Town Team Changes

We can expect team changes tomorrow when Ipswich Town take on Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow night at Portman Road.

Jonas Knudsen is suspended, which of course opens the door for Myles Kenlock but there will be more.

With Town playing five Championship matches in just over two weeks the need to freshen up the team is a necessary evil.

Both Emyr Huws and Teddy Bishop return to the Town squad and I would expect them to get some game time and perhaps in the case of Huws, from the start!

Manager Mick McCarthy suggested that although they have looked very sharp in training this week, there is a big difference between playing under 23 football and the competitive nature that exists in this division, where points are of paramount importance.

McCarthy explained, ‘ They`re in the squad because we’ve got four games coming up in quick succession and they could both contribute. Whether they can cover 90 minutes in Championship football is another matter?’

I suspect that Emyr Huws might get the nod ahead of Everton loanee Callum Connelly but I think ‘Bish’ won’t be risked immediately.

His energy and technical ability could come in handy in the final few minutes though, when players are beginning to tire.

If he makes changes up front, then I would think he might bench either David McGoldrick or Martyn Waghorn, and if one of our four main strikers find themselves sitting this one out then it will surely be to give Freddie Sears a start.

He must be frustrated at falling down the pecking order, since the arrival of Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn and his energetic style might just suit the Tractor Boys tomorrow.

The game is televised live on Sky, so supporters from around the world will once again be able to see the Blues in action. Our record recently when featured in a live transmission has not been good, but if we can get an early goal, then this could all change the dynamics of the game and we could go on to win it.

Mick McCarthy always keeps his cards close to his chest – at least in Championship matches, so it is never easy to second guess a Town side but there will be team changes.

The 58-year-old has been in charge of a staggering 845 competitive games in English football with Millwall, Sunderland, Wolves and now Ipswich; along of course with 52 games as boss of the Republic of Ireland, and his vast experience at this level, will mean he will want to spring a surprise or two tomorrow night.
