Derby have confirmed Steve McClaren as their new head coach on a three-year contract but he will only have a watching brief for the Ipswich game.

Town go to Pride Park days after Nigel Cough was sacked and youth team coach Darren Wassell in charge for the night.

Former England boss McLaren was the Rams` first choice to succeed Nigel Clough and joins them from QPR where he has been working under Harry Redknapp since July.

The 52-year-old`s appointment sees him return for a third spell at the club he served first as a player and then assistant to Jim Smith, whom he helped to guide Derby to the Premier League in the 1995/96 season.

Ex Carlisle and Preston boss Paul Simpson will be his first-team coach and former Manchester United coach Eric Steele, released by David Moyes, is goalkeeping coach.

The swift appointment will not help Town’s cause, especially with the away form so poor – but you never know…
