McCarthy Up For Derby

Manager Mick McCarthy has assured fans that he more than understands our derby feelings with Norwich ahead of his first East Anglia clash.

With the gaffer never having tasted this particular clash before, he told the Official Site that having experienced other derbies as both a player and a manager he knows what’s at stake in terms of local pride and bragging rights, but his focus will be on making sure we get three points irrespective of that.

‘I’ve been involved in a number of derbies as both a manager and a player and they are great occasions, especially for the supporters with bragging rights at take.’

Going on to reference Celtic v Rangers, Man City v Man U, Millwall v West Ham and Wolves v West Brom he adds that he’s experienced some very big ones indeed and he knows that this weekend will be no different, joking that even the ‘genteel’ towns of Lyon and St Etienne are only genteel until they play each other, so the emotions derbies bring up are something special and different.

‘I do understand what it means to people and we will be doing our best to win the game as we do every game but it’s worth remembering that there are another 33 matches in the Championship aside from the two derby fixtures. It’s consistency over that time I’m looking for but I’m under no illusions what this game means to the supporters.’

McCarthy says that applies to the players as well, everybody knows what’s at stake for the supporters, but their job has to be to focus on the match as a match and nothing more.
