Manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed that finishing in the top six is the aim for Ipswich this season, but he expects tomorrow’s opponents Fulham to be up there with us.

With the Championship campaign kicking off tomorrow, McCarthy has told the Official Site of our stated aim for the campaign and how he’s looking forward to us kicking off the season in front of the Sky cameras.

‘Fulham have come down from the Premier League after many years at that level but they have a squad that looks strong enough to give them a good chance of bouncing back at the first attempt and I’m expecting them to be in contention for automatic promotion. We know it’s going to be a real test for us. We’ve certainly got a challenging month ahead but the Championship is a gruelling, testing league though.’

McCarthy goes on to say that in many ways it’s similar to our start last season given we face two of the relegated Premier League sides in our opening games, but we have to play them at some point and it’s about us being on our game rather than worrying about them and where they were last season.

‘While Fulham will be targeting automatic promotion, we’re looking to build on the success we had last year and that means finishing in the top six. That is the next step for us, that is the challenge and we’ll find out if we are good enough.’
