Captain Gareth McAuley scored his first international goal for Northern Ireland in their 3-0 win over San Marino at Stadio Olimpico.

McAuley won his 14th match as Nigel Worthington’s men brushed aside their World Cup Qualifying Group Three match. Chris Brunt and Grant McCann also got on the scoresheet for the Irish.

Elsewhere, Town’s Macedonian midfielder Veliche Shumulikoski played the first-half in his country’s 1-1 draw with Moldova.

Defender Alex Bruce could not add to his tally of international caps for the Republic or Ireland after being left out of the squad that faced Georgia.

Last night, Owen Garvan starred in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 draw with their German counterparts.
