Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that he has held talks with Sunderland over the possibility of striker Connor Wickham rejoining the Blues on loan.

Prior to Wickham’s £8.1 million sale to Sunderland earlier in the summer, plenty of possible arrangements had been mooted whereby the 18-year-old would return to Ipswich on loan after being sold. Though there had been no hint of such a deal with Sunderland, Jewell has approached Black Cats boss Steve Bruce about the possibility.

‘I spoke with Steve the other day and we were chatting about various things,’ Jewell explained to the local press. ‘I thought he (Connor) probably needed another year in the Championship and I said to Steve if they wanted to loan him back, we would take him. He, very cleverly, went on to another subject.’

Wickham has so far struggled for opportunities in the Sunderland first team, with just three appearances from the bench since his arrival at the Stadium of Light. However, any potential return for the England U21 international looks highly likely to depend on whether Sunderland are able to sign another striker before the transfer window closes.

Meanwhile Jewell is also hoping to fend off interest in one of his current strikers with Ipswich reported to have rejected a £350,000 bid from Blackpool for Jason Scotland. The 32-year-old had previously been tipped to leave the club this summer but may now be retained following his impressive goalscoring performance against Leeds United.

There may yet be further movement both in and out of Portman Road as the clock counts down to the transfer deadline at 11pm this evening. Aside from Scotland, Grant Leadbitter, Shane O’Connor, Jaime Peters and Tamas Priskin have all been linked with moves away recently, whilst Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose and Celtic defender Jos Hooiveld are the latest names to emerge as possible targets for Jewell.
