Ipswich Chief Evans Thwarted by Premier League

Ipswich Town owner Marcus Evans’ plans to have a wage cap introduced by the Championship have bee suppered by the Premier League.

In an attempt to create a level playing field, Evans proposed that clubs relegated from the top flight, who will already get a parachute payment of £59m, should have their wage spend capped at £16m for the first year, dropping to £10m and then £8m in te third year.

Crystal Palace suggested an alternative proposal which would mean relegated clubs wouldn`t receive their share of TV income from the Football League – estimated at around £2m.

But an e-mail sent by PL chairman Richard Scudamore threatened the Football league with a total withdrawal of their contribution of solidarity payment of around £2.3m to Championship clubs and that was enough for the meeting in Walsall to end in a no-vote for Evans and Palace.
