Ipswich Town have confirmed that former favourite Kieron Dyer has returned to West Ham United having finished his one month loan deal with the Blues.

Dyer made his surprise return to Portman Road on 11 March after 12 years away from his hometown club, but the 32-year-old has only made 1 start and 3 substitute appearances in that time, including 19 minutes from the bench against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Town boss Paul Jewell revealed that he had been hoping to extend Dyer’s deal, but the Hammers have called for the former England international to return as they continue to battle for their Premier League survival.

Jewell told the Club’s Official Website: ‘I spoke to West Ham about Kieron on Friday with the intention of trying to keep him on loan until the end of the season.

‘I received some encouragement but then Kieron came up after training and said that Avram Grant [West Ham boss] had been on the phone and told him he wanted him back at West Ham.

‘We wish Kieron all the best for the future, wherever his future will be,’ Jewell added.

The departure of Dyer may come as something of a disappointment to some Town fans, but having made little impact since his return, it is debatable whether Jewell will be interested in signing the midfielder on a permanent basis. Dyer is set to be out-of-contract at Upton Park in the summer, but wages would be a likely stumbling block and rumours suggest that more attention is likely to be focused on securing a deal for fellow loanee Jimmy Bullard.

Meanwhile Ipswich midfielder Alan Quinn has become the latest of the club’s out-of-contract players to be told that his deal will not be renewed in the summer. The 31-year-old, who was signed by Jim Magilton from Sheffield United in 2008, suffered a groin injury in Town’s pre-season friendly win at Leiston in late July, and a number of further setbacks have kept him on the sidelines for the entire season. Quinn follows Pablo Counago, Kevin Lisbie, Ian McLoughlin and Billy Clark who will all be released at the end of the season.
