Midfielder Lee Bowyer is the latest player to be linked with a move to Ipswich Town following his release by Birmingham City.

Bowyer joined Birmingham on loan from West Ham United in January 2009 before sealing a permanent switch to St Andrews the following summer. The 34-year-old netted 12 goals in 94 appearances in all competitions for City before being released after the Midlanders were relegated from the Premier League.

Several clubs have been linked with Bowyer, including Derby County and his former club Leeds United. However, Town are thought to be leading the chase for the one-time England international, with tabloid reports claiming that the Blues are currently in talks over a deal that would make Bowyer one of the top wage earners at Portman Road.

Concerns will no doubt be raised over Bowyer’s prior disciplinary record, whilst there may also be doubts about his age. Despite that, Ipswich are in urgent need of reinforcements in the centre of the field and the arrival of an experienced Premier League midfield would certainly be a boost. The Blues also need to fill the gaps left by recently-departed players, most notably former captain David Norris and loanee Jimmy Bullard. Recent reports however suggest that Bullard, who was previously ruled out as too costly a target, could be back on Jewell’s radar following the sale of Connor Wickham last week.
