Another Left Back On Our Radar?

According to the TWTD website, Ipswich Town have made a bid for Leeds United’s forward-thinking leftie Leif Davis. This is despite the recent acquisition of Greg Leigh!

What can we read into this? Perhaps manager Kieran McKenna wants competition for places but the most likely reason for the possible recruitment of another wing-back is flexibility. The 22-year-old can also play in central defence. Davis is seen as surplus to requirements at Elland Road, and although the Yorkshire club apparently want 1.5 million for the player, the Blues may be able to get him for around two-thirds of that price. And for his parent club (Leeds United) Davis has made six first-team starts, along with eight bench-warming appearances, and he seems to show real promise.

Town hope to get him relatively cheaply. Leeds United might just be willing to part with the defender for less than the original asking price. He had a disappointing spell at Bournemouth last season (due mainly to injury) and he might just be prepared to drop down a league. I have heard from a source in Yorkshire they would accept a bid of 1.2 million, so there is still a lot of work to do here and he must of course agree to leave.

Davis is a Geordie and he is pretty quick for someone who is 6ft tall. Former Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa rated him very highly and he could be the perfect fit for Ipswich Town. We need someone with pace on the other flank who can complement Wes Burns, and his playing credentials suggest that he could be an ideal candidate. Davis describes his style as “a modern-day, attacking left-back,” and that is just what McKenna has been looking for! Unlike Burns, however, he will not supplement his appearances with too many goals. In his brief foray into the Premiership with Leeds, and with Championship club Bournemouth, he has yet to find the net.
