Manager Paul Jewell has confirmed that Ipswich Town have held talks over a possible deal for midfielder George Boateng, whilst the club have had a bid rejected for an unnamed winger.

Former Hull City man Boateng, who is also understood to be interesting Nottingham Forest, had recently been training with the Town squad after being released by Greek club Skoda Xanthi this summer. Boss Jewell is known to be looking for a holding midfield player and has confirmed that talks have been held with Boateng’s agent, though the 35-year-old is just one possible target for the position.

Meanwhile Jewell has also revealed that one of the two bids he had been waiting on this week has been turned down. Ipswich had recently made offers for one wide midfielder and one striker, but while the status of the latter remains unknown, the former has been unsuccessful. However, the Town manager says he is undeterred by the setback.

‘We have made a bid for a wide midfielder and that has been rejected. That was no surprise because you can make your first bid £3m and it will still be knocked back,’ Jewell told the Club’s Official Website. ‘I’ll talk to the owner to see whether we go back with another offer but we have other options.

The identities of the players in question remain unknown. Rumours had circulated earlier in the week that the striker being targeted was Watford’s Marvin Sordell, but local press reports in Hertfordshire soon revealed that the Hornets had received no bids for the 20-year-old. The winger in question is also a mystery. Speculation had surfaced about a possible bid for Peterborough United winger George Boyd, but the League One Playoff winners are understood to have denied any contact with the Blues.
