Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham has cleaned up at the 2011 Football League Awards after being named the npower Football League Young Player of the Year and the Championship Apprentice of the Year.

Wickham picked up the awards at the annual ceremony in London on Sunday evening. The teenager, who turns 18 at the end of the month, had been announced last week as one of three contenders for the Young Player prize, with Watford’s Will Buckley and Norwich City’s on-loan Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury the losing nominees. Wickham also fought off competition from Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and Watford’s Adam Thompson to claim the Apprentice title.

“To win one award was amazing, to get this one as well is unbelievable,” said Wickham upon receiving the Young Player of the Year award. “I have been fortunate to play a lot of football this season and that has been a massive help in improving my game. This award is recognition of that progress and I am delighted.”

The awards cap a great few months for Wickham, who had already picked up the npower Championship Player of the Month award in February having re-established himself in the first team with 6 league goals since late January – including his first professional hat-trick. The Blues frontman is clearly gaining recognition as one of the top talents outside the top flight, and with the striker again set to join up with the England U21 international squad this week, his reputation continues to grow. With the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United all widely thought to be keeping tabs on Wickham, he could be set for big things in the future – though hopefully he won’t be going anywhere too soon!

Congratulations, Connor!
