Versatile Hewitt

Elliott Hewitt has been tipped to have a successful 2014/2015 season with Ipswich, and perhaps not in a more familiar defensive role.

The Welsh U21 defender started last season as Mick McCarthy’s first choice right back before Luke Chambers made that role his own, eventually in order to continue his development Hewitt was loaned out to Gillingham, where he played 20-games.

Gillingham boss Peter Taylor has spoken glowingly about Hewitt in the East Anglian Daily Times and given his liking to get forward from his right back role has suggested that if he can’t get into the Ipswich side at right back then he could see him as an effective midfielder.

Taylor also revealed that he’d kept in constant contact with McCarthy to update him personally on how Hewitt was going during his loan spell with the league 1 side.

Another that also spent time on loan with Gillingham last season was young striker Jack Marriott.

The 19-year-old only spent a month at Priestfield, with most of his time on loan from Portman Road spent with Woking, but with his chances limited an extension that was wanted wasn’t granted.

I think all at Ipswich know he has promise but Taylor say ‘he is certainly an exciting talent’ and even in his one outing he did enough to impress him, almost scoring twice in five-minutes. Had Gillingham not been involved in a relegation battle Marriott almost certainly would have featured more.
