Colchester boss John Ward is keen on taking Ipswich Town youngster Luke Hyam on loan in January.

According to sources, in Essex the U’s boss has watched Hyam along with assistant Joe Dunne and feel he could do a job anchoring the League One’s side’s midfield.

Hyam, whose contract expires in the summer, has figured just once this season, in the Carling Cup against Northampton, and is not likely to be kept on by Paul Jewell.

Roy Keane used Hyam a fair bit but it seems the young midfielder will link up with his old academy pal Jamie Griffiths who is already training with the U’s with a view to sign in the new year.
