Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that he is waiting on a bid for a defender, whilst the club is on the verge of completing a loan move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Keith Andrews.

Town are in need of defensive reinforcements ahead of Saturday’s Championship clash against Hull City, with Damien Delaney doubtful and Ivar Ingimarsson struggling with the same injury he suffered in pre-season. Jewell has now revealed that an offer has been tabled for another centre-back, though the Blues are facing stiff competition for the unnamed target.

Jewell told the Official Ipswich Town Website: “I want four central defenders ideally but we are all chasing the same sort of player.”

“That is the sort of competition we are up against and it is difficult but we are trying and we have a bid in for a player that we are waiting on an answer.”

Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala has been linked in the past week, though Jewell refused to comment on specific rumours. The Town boss did however reveal that the Blues had targeted Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson, but the pair ultimately joined Stoke City.

Meanwhile Jewell has confirmed that Blackburn midfielder Andrews has been at Portman Road this week to finalise his long-awaited loan move, though contrary to some reports earlier in the week, the deal has not yet been officially completed.

“We’re just waiting on some paperwork to come back from Blackburn,” Jewell told the local press on Thursday morning. “Hopefully he’ll be able to join in training this morning at 9.45 and we’ll have him until at least January.”

Elsewhere goalkeeper Brian Murphy has joined QPR following his release from Town earlier in the summer. The 28-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract at Portman Road at the end of last season and has now signed a two-year-deal with the Premier League newcomers.
