Ipswich Town lost away at Colchester in what was the two sides first meeting for 50 years. A ninth minute goal for Karl Duguid was enough to secure the win for the U’s, however, Town had a perfectly good Jon Macken goal ruled out by the referee.

Towns welcomed Sylvain Legwinski and Simon Walton back into the side, with groin injury victim Gavin Wiliams only on the bench. Sito kept his place ahead of the available again Alex Bruce.

Colchester made all the early running, with Sito having to clear smartly to prevent Chris Iwelumo from getting his head to the ball, just before Colchester took the lead.

Jamie Cureton broke inside and hit what seemed like a tame shot towards goal, but Lewis Price was unable to hold, and palmed it straight to Duguid, who had an easy finish.

Cureton continued to cause problems for the Town defence, and laid on chances for Izzet and Watson, before firing one of his own wide when he really should have hit the target.

Towns best and only real chance of the first half fell to Alan Lee, but the Irishman could only slide the ball accross the face of goal after Darren Currie’s cross was flicked on by Dan Harding.

Town had the ball in the net four minutes after the interval.

Alan Lee went past Wayne Brown on the edge of the Colchester area, but saw his shot saved by Davison, but the ball fell to Macken who bundled the ball home from 5 yards.

Despite no real protest from the Colchester players and fans, referee Probert disallowed the goal for a foul on the keeper, although TV replays show the goal to be perfectly legitimate.

Despite showing more promise than in the previous forty five minutes, Town never really got going, and the only clear cut second half chance fell to Billy Clarke, but the substitute could only shoot straight at the on rushing Davison.

Colchester continued to press, and Price had to save from Garcia and Iwelumo to avoid Town going even further behind.

Towns first defeat in five leaves Town in 12th position in the Championship
