Ex-keeper Richard Wright is close to becoming an Ipswich player again, according to local reports.

Wright left Ipswich for pastures new at Arsenal in a multi-million pound move, but never found his feet at Highbury or even Everton’s Goodison Park. He was close to re-joining Town last season from Everton, but the irresistible attraction of sitting on the West Ham bench as Rob Green’s understudy obviously proved too much and he duly signed for the Hammers.

However, the former England keeper spent an impressive spell at Southampton helping the club avoid relegation. An added sweetener for the deal could see former goalkeeping coach Malcolm Webster rejoin the Blues.

Webster and Wright worked together at Portman Road in the George Burley days, and again last season at St Mary’s. The Southampton goalkeeping coach is a contender to replace Andy Rhodes in the same position at Portman Road.

Vital Ipswich reported that Wrighty could be coming home a few weeks ago, but the deal is could be sealed within a week. Ipswich have been looking for a new number one since Neil Alexander joined SPL giants Rangers in January and Stephen Bywater was told that he would not be offered a deal at Town.
