Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith has been allowed to join League One Colchester United until the end of the season.

Smith was a regular in the Ipswich first team under previous manager Roy Keane, but the New Zealand international has yet to make a single appearance for new boss Paul Jewell. That seems to have been the prompt for the Blues manager to send Smith on loan to Suffolk neighbours Colchester for more first team football.

‘It will be a good opportunity for him to play games and we can get a good look at him,’ Jewell told the club’s Official Website. ‘Then he will come back to us for next season with a run of matches under his belt.’

Smith has made 36 league appearances for the Blues in 3 years and has been a surprise goalscorer this season, netting 3 times. The academy graduate turns 21 at the end of the month and it would be something of a surprise if he does not still have a future at Portman Road.
