Now the cynics amongst us may suggest that the only reason the club is extending the contracts of our bright young things, is to ensure that when they leave, they will not leave for peanuts.

Certainly, in the case of Tristan Nydam, this could well be the case because it is the worst kept secret in football that Arsenal have been monitoring his progress for some time and may make a bid for him in January it is thought.

In the case of Ben Morris there has been a lot of talk of late that his future may lie elsewhere and if it does, then once again the club is covered, should offers come in for him.

I would like to think however that Ipswich Town are following the Marcus Evans plan of developing players from youth who can do the business eventually in the first team.

In fairness to manager Mick McCarthy, he has not been afraid to blood youngsters if he thinks they are good enough, and we have already seen this season just how promising both Flynn Downes and Tristan Nydam are!

At 18, they have a bright future in the game and their early breakthrough at club level, has meant that they are already receiving some international recognition too.

As for striker Ben Morris he is also highly rated at the club and was top scorer last season for the under 23 side with 12 goals and has signed a new contract, which will take him through until 2019.

Tristan Nydam has agreed a deal until 2021 and is said to be ‘absolutely buzzing’ with the news!

Another reason to be cheerful is that Town find themselves going into another prolonged international break in good spirits. They are eighth in the Championship table, and just two points of the play-off places but with a game in hand.

This is apparently the best start in a decade and the last time we went anywhere near as close was we made the play-off’s!

So amid all the doom and gloom, there are a number of reasons to be cheerful today.

And of course yesterday, Flynn Downes played the full 90 minutes as England`s Under 19s destroyed the Faroe Islands 0-6 in their European Championship qualifier in Bulgaria, which adds further fuel to the feel good factor at Portman Road just now.
