Cambridge United have signed Ipswich Town’s third-choice keeper Tomas Holy on a seven-day emergency ahead of tonight’s match at Doncaster Rovers. I think this works perfectly for everyone.

The U’s loaned out goalkeeper Will Mannion to National South side Havant & Waterlooville on Friday, only to discover that Dimi Mitov had suffered a concussion during Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Shrewsbury Town and would be unavailable for a few days.

Kai McKenzie-Lyle replaced him in that heavy defeat, and the fear is that he is not quite ready to handle the pressure yet. He conceded three goals after Mitov had collided with striker Udoh of Shrewsbury Town before the interval. He looked shaky and unsure, and this alerted the Cambridge coaching crew that they must act fast!

Doncaster recorded a rare win on Saturday as they defeated Cheltenham 3-2, so this will be a good test for Holy. At Town, he has made it a habit of keeping clean sheets, and he will be looking to do something similar this evening at the Keepmoat Stadium. I still like him. He commands his box more effectively than either Hladky or Walton in my view.

He is profligate at times with his goal kicking, as he effortlessly drives the ball over the halfway line with consummate ease. He releases the ball much quicker than our other two as well.

Now I know Holy has his critics, and I get that. Sometimes he is still standing upright as the ball reaches the net, and his punching leaves a lot to be desired as well. This one week move will be a good test for all concerned, and it is in our interest too to ensure he gets some competitive football inside him – just in case he is called upon again.

This is a good move for everyone concerned, so good luck tonight Tomas, and I hope you keep another clean sheet! Five in a row, two seasons in a row for Town, I seem to recall!

And who knows if you do, they may want to keep you a bit longer, and you can happily observe from afar just how well your former goalkeeping colleagues are doing?
