That Injury Delay Changed Everything

We have made a bad habit of losing leads in winning positions, but on Saturday, it was that injury that conspired to stunt our momentum.  Plymouth defender Dan Scarr suffered a serious head injury, and once they had finally managed to bandage him up, we had lost almost five minutes of action. After this, were never quite the same again.

This inaction was the catalyst for our downfall in my view. We were playing fast-flowing football before that stoppage, and then we seemed to lose our momentum. There was another delay when Wes Burns hobbled off to be replaced by Kane Vincent-Young. I was convinced that Town would score again, but I was equally convinced that after this prolonged stoppage, we would lose our way, and sadly, so it was to prove in the end.

A football game is all about twists and turns, and that’s what makes it so exciting! The match was generally very entertaining, but we missed a bagful of chances, and the most guilty party was Freddie Ladapo. He is technically very gifted, and his hold-up play is very good, but he misses far too many good opportunities for a striker, and that is why his place is now under threat. I am hopeful that Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst can show him how it’s done because we simply don’t score enough goals under Keiran McKenna. The notable exception was the four we scored at Charlton, but even then, we contrived to lose a two-goal lead in added-on time, and the game ended 4-4!

We have been very unlucky too this season by conceding deflected shots that look like ‘worldies’ when they find the net, but in reality, there is a huge chunk of luck about most of them. Poor Cameron Burgess has fallen foul of this more than once this season. Now we must lick our wounds and move on. It was a magnificent crowd at Portman Road on Saturday, and it shows that there is real belief in Suffolk again. We still have a chance of automatic promotion, but we must not depend on a single goal to get us over the line if we are to get out of this league this season. It is rarely enough.
