Stockdale Up For The Fight

Ipswich Town goalkeeper David Stockdale says he is prepared to fight for the Blues’ cause after dismissing rumours about a premature return to Fulham.

Stockdale, who is on a season long loan deal from Craven Cottage, has been beaten 12 times in just two matches this week thanks to some calamitous Town defending against Southampton and Peterborough United. There had been talk after Saturday’s horrific 7-1 defeat that the 25-year-old was ready to cut his loan deal short, but he has quickly moved to dismiss the speculation.

Stockdale wrote on his Twitter page: ‘Rumours of me going back are rubbish! It’s a team game and I’m part of that team too!! I don’t throw the towel in! Time to fight and stand.’

The England international also paid tribute to the Town supporters: ‘A lot of great fans here at ITFC so enough of feeling down! Got a game to work for on Saturday and back to winning ways!!!’

Despite shipping seven goals, Stockdale could take little blame for the weekend defeat at Peterborough having arguably been Town’s standout performer, making a string of fine saves in the second half to prevent the scoreline being any more emphatic for the hosts.

While Stockdale is set to stay however, several players could still leave Portman Road this summer. Town boss Paul Jewell revealed on Friday that striker Tamas Priskin had been set to join Championship rivals Leeds United on loan until the Elland Road side pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

Shane O’Connor has also long been tipped for a move away having recently turned down a loan switch to League Two Crawley Town, whilst there are also doubts over the future of centre-back Tommy Smith. The New Zealand international, who has had a poor start to the campaign, was sent off after just 67 seconds at Peterborough on Saturday and now looks likely to fall down the defensive pecking order, with Jewell confirming his interest in ex-Stoke City defender Ibrahima Sonko and West Bromwich Albion’s Pablo Ibanez.
