Ipswich Town have confirmed the release of out-of-contract goalkeeper Brian Murphy, with Coventry City goalkeeper Keiren Westwood rumoured to be lined up as a replacement.

Signed by Roy Keane from Irish side Bohemians in 2009, Murphy started most of Town’s Carling Cup matches this season but has featured only four times in the league, with Marton Fulop and Arran Lee-Barrett having been preferred in goal. The Republic of Ireland international, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Saturday, was offered a contract extension in April with his current deal set to expire this summer, but he has decided to turn the offer down.

The news coincides with rumours that Town boss Paul Jewell is targeting Coventry keeper Westwood. The 26-year-old, who rivals Murphy in goal for the Republic of Ireland, has impressed enormously since joining the Sky Blues from Carlisle United in 2008 but looks set to leave when his contract expires this summer. Reports claim that Ipswich are one of a host of teams in the race to acquire Westwood along with Premier League clubs Everton, Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Championship rivals Leicester City and Leeds United and SPL side Celtic.

A goalkeeper looks to be on Jewell’s wish list ahead of next season with Murphy set to depart, whilst rumours also suggest Fulop may leave the club this summer. The Hungarian international, who only signed from Sunderland in August last year, has one year remaining on his deal but reportedly may be sold to fund further transfers.

  • Can see him stalling on signing for us untill he sure Celtic will not come calling….It is always the same with these Irish boys when Celtic or Rangers are sniffing about…

  • I think more to the point, Everton are reportedly closing in on him. Westwood deserves a shot at Premier League football and I don’t think he’d turn that down.
