Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that he is planning to meet with his out-of-contract players within the next few weeks.

Town’s contract dilemma is well known about with 21 squad members set to leave the club when their current deals end in the summer. Jewell has revealed that talks with his players are already ongoing, and with the international break providing an opportunity to focus on matters off the field, the Blues boss is hopeful of completing deals in the next couple of weeks.

“Yes, I will be majoring on the contract situation over the next few days,” Jewell told local reporters. “There is a lot going on in the background.”

Little has been revealed on the extent to which negotiations have already taken place, though several players are known to have had discussions without any resolution so far. Captain David Norris controversially revealed that he had turned down a two year contract because he wanted a longer deal, whilst Gareth McAuley has so far been unable to agree terms. Meanwhile Damien Delaney revealed earlier in the year that he had not heard anything regarding a new deal so far, whilst other senior players such as Carlos Edwards, Brian Murphy and Colin Healy are also yet to secure their futures at Portman Road.

Decisions will also need to be made on the future of several players who are currently out on loan. Goalkeeper Ian McLoughlin and striker Ronan Murray have been loaned out in recent weeks, whilst Pablo Counago and Kevin Lisbie have spent all season at Crystal Palace and Millwall respectively.

What’s your opinion of the contract situation at Portman Road? Do you think the Blues should have resolved this problem a long time ago, or has Jewell been sensible in waiting until Town’s Championship safety is more secure? Have your say on this story by joining Vital Ipswich:
