Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has confirmed his interest in signing Aston Villa defender Habib Beye on loan.

Having joined Villa in 2009 following a successful spell at Newcastle United, right-back or centre-back Beye has rarely been used at Villa Park and looks likely to be interested in offers of first team football elsewhere. Rumours emerged earlier this week that Town were interested in a loan deal for the defender, and Jewell has since revealed that he hopes to complete a deal for the Senegal international this week.

‘Habid Beye has been mentioned, and I`ve spoken to Aston Villa and that`s something I`ve been trying to do to improve the squad. But there`s been nothing yet,’ Jewell told the East Anglian press. ‘He was in France yesterday. I hope he comes, but I have not heard anthing since yesterday.’

Beye has lacked football in recent seasons and at 33 years old, he is unlikely to be a long-term choice for the Blues. However, with Ipswich in desperate need of a natural right-back, Beye could offer valuable cover and experience to the Town backline.
