This Promotion Race Just Got A Lot Closer

One of the biggest upsets of the whole League One season occurred today when Sheffield Wednesday were defeated 1-0 at the New Lawn by basement club Forest Green! Nobody saw this one coming – except perhaps Ipswich Town 62 Old Boy who posted on the TWTD website these prophetic remarks after the result came in.

I keep banging on about the current form table being the most relevant metric. We are currently on top of it. We will make automatic promotion if we stay top of the form table.

It would appear that we have found a rich vein of form at precisely the right time of the season, and both Wednesday and Plymouth are starting to lose matches. The Pilgrims went down 3-0 recently at Barnsley, and the Yorkshire club also disposed of the Owls 4-2, so we must be thankful we have more time to prepare for our visit to the Oakwell Stadium, which is now set to take place on the 25th of April. Is it a blessing in disguise?

We must stay grounded though, because Barnsley are seemingly unstoppable at home, and they have won their last four encounters, so it is not just their home form that is getting them maximum points. They are like a racehorse coming in on the blindside!

As I suggested in another article, this is very much a four-horse race, and yet only two will make those automatic promotion spots, but if form was an indicator of success, then it could be ourselves and Barnsley who would claim those slots. Darren Moore’s men are now without a win in three games, and Plymouth are finally starting to find the going a bit rough. The size of their squad remains a big issue on the run-in, I suspect.

It’s all about the M-word again, and although we are 5 points behind the Pilgrims, we do have a game in hand, and we are now just three points behind Wednesday, having played the same number of games. Barnsley travel to Exeter on Tuesday night, and if they win, they will be level on points with Town, having played the same number of games.  Goal difference might eventually decide it, and if, so we are in a good place.
