Is This Really What We Want?

Goals are scored by strikers usually because they get lots of help from the midfield. With the recent acquisition of 21-year-old Rekeem Harper from West Brom for a reported 500,000 quid, we now have the makings of a strong set of midfielders with Wes Burns and Lee Evans joining us too.

So we can assume that these three players will be able to assist our forwards. If this is indeed the case, then it will surely test just how good our forwards are? James Norwood was scoring bags of goals before he joined us from Tranmere, but a series of niggly injuries and some uncreative midfield displays has obviously not helped his cause.

Last season he finished as our top goalscorer with 10 goals from 28 games played, which is an average of almost one goal every three games. It was quite frankly not that impressive.

With Rovers, he was averaging around a goal every two games. He notched up 82 goals in 165 matches for the Birkenhead club, which is phenomenal by anybody’s standards. Now that we have a new midfield, it will be interesting to see if his goals per game ratio improves significantly.

So it looks like our midfield is sorted so what about our attack? QPR striker Macauley Bonne is likely to join us on a season-long loan. But is this really what we want? Another player with his head turned in a different direction?

In fairness to Troy Parrott, who was on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur, he gave it his best shot. He did not always perform in the way we would have liked but he did seem committed to the cause. There is no guarantee that Bonne will apply himself in the same way, but if he is used as a backup, then I have no qualms about it.

The paucity of transfer activity on the forward front is a bit concerning though. The clock is ticking and we need to bring in more forwards sooner rather than later. Kayden Jackson has pace but will he still be around when the new season kicks off and I guess the same applies to Aaron Drinan.

We have lost Freddie Sears and Oliver Hawkins, and as 18 players have moved on from a rather top-heavy squad, we only have only acquired three new recruits. Interestingly perhaps, they are all midfielders. The odd loan player is acceptable but if we want to strike it rich, then we really have to purchase a couple more forwards and as soon as possible, please.
