Reports over the weekend have suggested that Sheffield United’s Ched Evans could be the mystery striker whom Ipswich Town had made an offer for last week.

Town and Evans have never been too far away from each other in the press this summer. The former Norwich City loanee was first linked at the end of last season before reports in June claimed that Town were in talks over a deal for the 22-year-old. Following last week’s news that manager Paul Jewell is waiting on a bid for a striker, the latest reports suggest that Town have offered £1 million for Evans. In addition, Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson is said to be under pressure to sell the Welsh international, who is one of the highest earners at Bramall Lane.

Progress towards new signings seems to have been rather slow over the past week, but Town are known to be targeting at least one striker and one midfielder as well as further additions to the backline. Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham is one of the names to have emerged in the past few days, with some rumours suggesting that Town have made an offer for the 26-year-old. However, new Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay is understood to view Whittingham as a major part of his plans for the new season and seems unlikely to sell the former England U21 international.
