It was always Likely to be a tough match against one of the teams that has just come down from the Premiership new tactics delighted nearly 20,000 at Portman Road.

For most of the game, it was end to end with new loanee Tom Lawrence a revelation. Lawrence looked purposeful on the ball and made incisive runs created numerous chances and stirring the crowd.

Freddie Sears also seemed totally focused and gave his all throughout the game very nearly winning the match for Town on two separate occasions.

The last ten minutes was the best I have seen Ipswich in many years as they mounted a series of attacks with Sears hitting the post and two goalmouth clearances saving Villa. Skuse came close and so too did substitute Lion Best, as their efforts were both cleared off the line.

Mick threw on two strikers – Leon Best and Luke Varney near the end and the crowd was really animated and excited.

The result was probably a fair one but Ipswich so nearly won it.
What heartened the crowd was the positive approach in trying everything to win at the last gasp.

This was a really good game and a good all-round performance and gives us all much encouragement for the next part of the season.
