Ipswich Town’s Doomsday Scenario

We only need a point at Blackburn to make it into the play-off’s but as we all know, Ipswich Town usually don’t seem to do things the easy way!

Perhaps if it had not been Blackburn Rovers we may have felt a bit more confident about our last game of the season. If it had have been say a Birmingham City or even a Charlton Athletic, I would have been relatively contented because they don’t have Jordan Rhodes and like Blackburn they have little to play for.

Rhodes, was shipped out by Roy Keane because the manager fell out with his goalkeeping coach father Andy.

It angered most of us at the time and we discovered today via the East Anglian Daily Times that Joe Royle left Ipswich with a stark warning. ‘One of the last things I told the club before leaving was ‘look after Jordan`, but they sold him and sold him cheaply.’

It was a huge error of judgement by the Irishman that comes back to haunt us every time we play the men from Lancashire and expect much the same on Saturday because he is destined to score again!

And with Rudy Gestede and Joshua King likely to be involved as well, they certainly have some fire power up front these days.

Mick McCarthy is right in suggesting that we must go for a win because any other policy would be playing with fire. If we sneak another draw as we did at Wolves then it is job done but we must stay focused at all times – otherwise it could be curtains!

If we were to lose and Brentford failed to win by at least three goals at home to Wigan Athletic then we would still make it but I think they have too many attacking options not to add significantly to their goals for column but I suppose much depends on what state of mind Wigan are in?

Will they have been relegated by then? By tonight we should know the answer because if Rotherham are victorious at home this evening to Reading, then the Latics will already be down!

But taking the ‘ what if?’ doomsday scenario a little further there is every chance that Derby will also beat Reading on Saturday, as they have home advantage but much depends on what happens this evening, which will be make or break for either Reading, Wigan and Rotherham United – depending on how things eventually pan out?

As Airhead pointed out on the E.A.D.T. web chat this afternoon: Still a big, big job to be done. Lose at Blackburn by one, Brentford beat Wigan by three and Derby avoid defeat at home against Reading and it’s all over.

Thankfully with Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor at the helm we have old heads driving our promotion push.

They are been it, seen it, got the ‘T’ shirt sort of guys and I would not wish for anyone else to be orchestrating our affairs at this late stage of the season.

F.W. Vital Ipswich
