Ipswich Town Are Finally In The Clear

Town now find themselves on 52 points going into their next home match against Newcastle United tomorrow and any fears that the Blues might end up in a relegation dogfight, have been surely extinguished now.

Burton pulled a goal back in the dying embers of the game, when wing-back Myles Kenlock was adjudged to have fouled former blue Luke Varney and after it was converted by Lucas Atkins, there were a few hairy moments – not least when Lasse Vigen Christensen looped a shot onto the crossbar in added on time!

All in all though this was a deserved victory for the visitors and for the moment at least, relieves some of the pressure on under fire boss Mick McCarthy.

The manner of the win was encouraging too because both David McGoldrick and Freddie Sears looked sharp up front, which perhaps bodes well for the visit of the Geordies to Portman Road tomorrow?

In fact, Freddie Sears has now scored three in three after a brace in our last home game when we defeated Wigan 3-0.

Town got off to a shaky start in the first half and Burton Albion; who are just above the drop zone, started with a collective determination to get something from the game and put Town under pressure on a number of occasions but the defence held firm.

Ironically, it was Burton’s Luke Varney who turned the ball into his own net from a corner on 52 minutes that edged Town in front – although at first it seemed that it was Captain Fantastic Luke Chambers who had nodded it home.

Now I think the rebuilding program can begin. Perhaps against Newcastle tomorrow at home, McCarthy will look to experience in the hope of getting something from the match but after that, there really is no excuse not to blood some of the youngsters in my view.

I would like to see more of our fridge players and in particular young England striker Ben Morris and midfield Irish prospect Adam McDonnell.

He may also consider using forwards Kieffer Moore and Dominic Samuel but as this terribly disappointing season draws to a close, we must start to blood more of our own players and not just ones that are seemingly passing through.
