Ipswich Nearing The Top Of The Tree

Ipswich are just two points off the top of the table with a game in hand after a hard fought win at home to struggling Bolton Wanderers.

Luke Chambers returned from injury and gave another captain’s performance showing the crowd something of what had been missing at the back. The fist pumps returned and his passion was there for all to see.

Passion was also visible from the unflappable Mr Cool, the irrepressible Cole Skuse, when his long distance volley took a deflection and powered into the net to give ipswich the lead early in the second half.

His reaction was wonderful as he leapt several feet in the air and waved to sections of the crowd – and what must have been his friends and relatives!

It was also evident when David McGoldrick scored the second close to the end. He had worked his socks off sprinting everywhere around the field, collecting the call from the back and trying to make something happen. He was my man of the match and certainly deserved his goal.

The most exciting player on display though was Bersant Celina, who came on at the start of the second half and scared the life out of the Bolton defence with his surging runs into their box. He is a very exciting prospect and the home fans warmed to him – as we had of course with Tom Lawrence.

Mick’s change of shape after halftime and the introduction of Celina made all the difference and the second half was much better than the first, which had few highlights.

Despite having had so many injuries, Ipswich are still very near the top of the table, with more players set to return soon – including some creative ones.

This is very encouraging and the season has got off to a really good start. Disappointingly only 14,000 fans came to see the game which saw Town gain another three valuable points.

Hopefully more results like this will bring supporters back, as the team thoroughly deserve.
