Reports claim that Ipswich Town are pursuing a deal for midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, who was recently released by Aston Villa.

Former England U21 international Reo-Coker joined Villa from West Ham United for around £8.5 million in 2007 and subsequently spent four seasons at Villa Park, scoring one goal in 119 appearances. However, despite a stint as club captain under previous manager Gerard Houllier, the 27-year-old left the Midlanders in May having not been offered a new contract.

Several clubs are thought to be in the hunt for Reo-Coker, with West Bromwich Albion having looked most likely to land the midfielder despite interest from Newcastle United and Stoke City. However, tabloid reports overnight have claimed that the former Wimbledon midfielder has also been holding talks with Ipswich over a possible free transfer.

Town are known to be closing in on new signings this week with released Birmingham City midfielder Lee Bowyer widely thought to be on the brink of a move to Portman Road. The Blues have however missed out on some of their other targets, with Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger and former Portsmouth striker David Nugent both joining Championship rivals Leicester City this week.
