In a recent survey of supporters thoughts in a local rag, more than 75 % felt that this guy was the best and there was no need to look elsewhere. Who am I referring to? None other than Tomas Holy, who has just been rewarded with another year at the club, and the chance once again to cement his place in the Ipswich Town team. At 28, he is the perfect age for a keeper and although he still has a lot to learn, I think he can do us proud next term.
He said on social media that a message he received the other day made him very happy. ‘ The club showed an interest to use extension clause in my contract, so that means that automatically my contract is extended for another year and I’m gonna stay a player of Ipswich at least until June 2022. I’m so delighted because of this and I understand it as an appreciation of our cooperation so far, but first and foremost it’s about one year in addition in front of our fans.’
How many fans he will be in front of remains to be seen but there is little doubt that when it comes to commitment to the cause and his desire to be the best goalkeeper at the club he is a hard act to follow. He has an infectious personality and his goal kicking is effortless. I have never seen a keeper kick upfield with such consummate ease, and at 6ft 7 inches, (2.06 meters) he is a commanding figure in goal.
Last season was very much a learning curve for the big Czech, but let’s not forget that when we were flying at the beginning of the season, he produced five clean sheets in a row and proved that for a man with a large frame, he was deceptively skilful – not just with his hands, but sometimes with his feet. A seriously damaged shoulder was perhaps responsible for some erratic keeping as the season developed and when Will Norris was vying for his position. He should, however, start the new campaign as our number one again.
